"The statue of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus stood in front of a small brick church in the lower 9th ward. I decided to superimpose the statue in front of an extremely damaged building, taken from just a few blocks away, to emphasize the irony and hope of this image.
After spreading the red stripes onto the ground to symbolize the bloodshed caused by Katrina, I painted within those stripes swirls emulating a hurricane as seen on radar." Rolland Golden
